Peer Supporter Training Set

5/11/2023

Peer Recovery Support has become an integral component to promote recovery, wellness and resiliency for individuals with mental health challenges and substance use disorders.  Over the past few years, Ohio’s behavioral health services have been incorporating Peer Recovery Supporters with lived experience into the workplace more and more to promote self-determination, self-advocacy, well-being, and independence among those in recovery.

To meet the rising demand for Certified Peer Supporters in our county, the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board is partnering with Flying High Inc. to offer a 40-hour in-person Peer Supporter Training. This training will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 12-16, 2023, at the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board office, 27 Vista Drive, Lisbon, OH 44432.

As there are certain requirements that must be met for an individual to pursue certification as a Peer Supporter, we are asking our community partners to help us identify potential candidates and to share this information with them.

The following is required for a complete and compliant PRS certification application:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED (there is no waiver or exception to this requirement)
  • Complete a certification application in eLicense.
  • Complete 11 online eBased Academy Coursesand the 40-hour in-person course.
  • Pass the online Ohio Peer Recovery Supporter Certification Exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • Complete a Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) background check and a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) criminal records check within one year of application submission.
  • Have no record of a disqualifying offense(see attachment)
  • Individuals may not be certified as a PRS while on probation, parole or any type of court sanction. You may complete training while on probation/parole/court sanction, but you must wait until after your probation/parole/court sanction has ended to apply for certification as a PRS.

Registration for the training is required. To register, email Donna Magada at dmagada@flyinghighinc.org. The registration deadline is Monday, June 5. Space is limited, and priority will be given to Columbiana County residents who register by May 31.
