The stigma of mental illness still exists, even though society has become more accepting and understanding of mental illness in recent years. In a recent survey of Columbiana County residents conducted by Youngstown State University, nearly all of those responding believe that persons with mental illness can recover; however, they have an incomplete understanding of what is necessary to support recovery. Most believe the type, degree, and severity of the illness or taking medications and participating in a treatment program dictates recovery. Support from peers, family, the community, opportunities to pursue one's goals, and relief from the negative effects of stigma are not always recognized as important in recovery.
Personal stories of individuals recovering with mental illness can help others understand that having a mental illness is nothing to be embarrassed about.
